Manuel Cervantes

Manuel Cervantes has been a photographer for over 40 years. Throughout this time, he has worked across all genres of photography, traveling extensively throughout Cuba to capture the diverse realities of the country.

At 62 years old, he earned a degree in sociology, and has since chosen to focus his photography on projects that involve communities across Cuba, exploring how they shape the culture and society. His work has included programs related to religion, gender, and Cuban identity, reflecting the social fabric of the nation.

He has been documenting Cuba since the 1980s and 1990s, and ever since, with a vision that has grown increasingly rooted in the Cuban experience.

“My photography has become not just a profession, but a lifelong journey to understand and convey the essence of Cuba.”

Manuel’s passion for photography was passed on to his son Victor, whose work we also feature on Against the Grain. Like his father Victor loves engaging and photographing local people and showing the unique energy of his home city and all aspects of Cuban culture through his lens.
