  • H2O

All the photos in this series were taken on my 1984 Nikonos V. Originally built as a scuba diving camera, I first discovered it through surfing, after seeing a small community of surf photographers sharing some incredible images they had taken with it online several years ago.

I have always loved swimming, surfing and being in the sea, and there is something really special about shooting in the water, especially on film. The Nikonos is another rangefinder based camera, so it can be hit and miss, but when a frame works it feels like magic.

‘Swimmer at Dawn’ was actually from the very first roll I put through the camera. I had just picked it up second hand and was unsure whether it even worked at all. Some of my favourite images from the Nikonos were taken on that first roll.

  • MEX

All photos in the Mexico series were taken on a Rollei 35 from 1973, which I picked up shortly before my trip last year. A good friend had been using one for years and I had always admired it, so eventually I had to get one myself. It’s a fully manual, zone focus camera where distance is set by estimation rather than through-the-lens focusing. It can be tricky to get right, but I love how compact and inconspicuous it is. It tends to attract a warm, curious response from strangers, which makes it a great option for street photography and travel.
